Squirt Update...

Thanks to everyone who's asked about Squirt, he is surprisingly doing awesome! He has a cast on now (all the way up to his arm-pit, over kill if you ask me) and barely seems to notice it. He's only used it as a club on me a couple of times, Little Man and the dog have avoided injury so far! He get's the cast off next Tuesday and then they'll put a splint in between his fingers for a month to make sure the skin doesn't fuse together again (which if the original dr. would have done this we wouldn't be here right now!) This morning was kind of sad, I set a sippy cup full of milk in front of him and walked away. Then he started crying... when I came back I was just like "what?? it's full, what's the problem?" then walked away again and he started crying again (well, more like whining) finally Little Man said "Here Squirt, I'll help you" apparantly Little Man had been watching him and becuase I filled the sippy full, he couldn't pick it up with one hand and needed help. That's what big brothers are for, because I was being a complete air head.

Oh and another story, (let me preface this with: I have a bad cold, I haven't been sleeping well or resting at all due to Squirt's surgery, Hubbie having broncitis, and Little Man just being Little Man) Squirt takes 1 tsp. of an anti-biotic 4 times a day, 1 tsp. of motrin as needed and 3 ml of Tylenol with codeine 3 times a day, he doesn't like the Tylenol with codeine though, so I only give it to him at night and give him motrin the rest of the time. Anyways, so the other night I just started dishing out his medicine at bedtime and gave him 1 tsp or 5 ml (almost double dose) of the Tylenol with codeine. While cleaning everything up I realized what I'd done and freaked out, so I called the doctor's office and left a message with the answering service (while talking to the girl, I turned a corner to sharp, ran into a wall and sent the phone flying across the room, then had to tell her that I gave my baby double the medicine that he needed, she was laughing so hard she could hardly breathe, now that I think about it she probably thought I was drunk! I told you I was tired!) then I had to speak with the nurse, who had me call poison control, who had me call the pharmacy to get specifics about the medicine, and then back to poison control. I had to check on him every 20 minutes to make sure he was breathing and that he was moving in his sleep for 4 hours! So I didn't get permission to go to sleep that night till almost midnight, with poison control checking on him hourly. Let me tell you those people are good... they take their job very seriously! Anyways, so Squirt has survived, with absolutely no help from me!

Squirt Survived!

Squirt had surgery today and did great (I had a night last night filled with dreams of him not waking from the anesthesia, so I'm relieved) He did not understand what we were doing or why he had to sit in the bed, he had the saddest eyes that just said "Save me mom!" It broke my heart... The anesthesioligist led me to believe he would put him to sleep with something he inhales and then they would wheel him in to the Operating room at which point they would put in the IV and all that. Well when it was time, the nurse came in and said "I'll just take him from you and we'll get this started" she hoisted him on her hip like a heavy sack of potatoes (he weighed a whopping 24 lbs!!) and took him away from me screaming, arms out stretched, all red in the face. Good thing he survived, because I couldn't have handled that being my last memory of my little guy.

When he woke up from it all, he was confused of course, looked at his hand and screamed bloody murder, I could hear "no want" in there but I'm the only one who could understand that. His little heart monitor started going crazy because his heart rate nearly doubled in the matter of an instant! But to show you what a sweet little boy he is, he even waved good bye to the nurse in his half drunken state! It was cute.

He slept of the meds all morning and his happily eating lunch right now (and even smiled for the picture below), there is something metal in the hand of the cast that sounds "really cool" when banged against the table and the wall! So he's testing it out well.

(Edited Later) I realized most people probably wouldn't know why Squirt was having surgery, so here's his story: January of 07 Squirt's brilliant mom left a humidfier on a chair, he crawled over to it, and touched the steam, the minute he screamed I knew exactly what had happened... I called the doctor and the nurse on call told me that as long as it was blistering it was okay, (of course this happened on a friday evening) it was good all weekend becuase he was taking anti-biotics for an ear infection. he finished those saturday night and on monday morning when I cleaned his bandage I realized it was now pussing green goop so I rushed him to the doctor, who turned around and rushed him to the hospital, it had become infected (a staff infection I guess) and required IV anti-bioctics. He was in the hospital for several days, becuase of the infection the only veign they could get an IV in was in his forehead, that made for a fun couple of days! Totally on an off note, Little Man took a bath with Squirt that sunday night and had some bug bites on his face, becasue they were in the bath together he got some of the infection in the open sores and they turned all crusty and gross and required some heavy duty anti-biotics as well. Because of our crappy insurance at the time this little blunder cost us about $2500. fortunatly it was tax time, so I took my tax return and turned it over to the hospital!

So as his hand healed, his pinky, ring, and middle finger on his left hand fused together and became webbed. We joked that maybe he'd win an olympic medal one day because he'd be a really great swimmer! The doctors felt that as he grew the webbing would effect his range of motion and possibly the way the fingers grew so they had to put him under and split the webbing. Unfortunatly, to correct the problem, they had to stitch down below his knuckle in his hand, so he'll have a really freaky looking hand for the next few years, they say by the time he's 7 or 8 it should have grown out to look normal.

That's our story!

To continue on with the "dinner" subject

Thanks to all those that have got a kick out my top ramen story... I'm glad to know you are all still alive after being fed it your self!

As I've said my kids are picky. I usually have to come up with 3 different meals, because I refuse to eat their food and they refuse to eat mine. So while staring in the pantry I came across a random box of Tuna Helper, I thought well it has noodles in it, so it's worth a try. I added some green beans to at least trick my mind that I was eating something fresh and healthy. Both boys looked at their plates said "yum!" and dug in... I was a little shocked, this is the first time probably ever that I've made one meal, and it was Tuna Helper of all things! Little Man said he really liked the "chicken" and Squirt and Little Man raced to see who could eat their green beans fastest. Even as I'm writing this, I'm still amazed... I'm sure tonight things will be back to "normal" but wow! what a night!

Dinner

Let me preface what I'm about to write by saying that my kids are both extremely picky eaters! Tonight, as usual, I make a really yummy dinner for Hubbie and I and something gross for my kids, tonight's request was Top Ramen, yum! So Little Man loves the stuff, and I know you're thinking- ewww! she actually feeds that to her children? I know, it's bad... but like I said they are so picky that when I find something they'll eat, I have to go with it! So I made it for Little Man and gave a small amount to Squirt, I wasn't optimistic that he'd actually eat it. Well he looked at it, picked up his glass of milk, poured it into the chicken Top Ramen and ATE away!! It was so gross, but I figured he was eating it and it wasn't going to kill him, right?

Anyways onto another topic, to kind of contrast my last post, this week has been so nice, I think almost 80 degrees. On Monday, I was sun bathing in the back yard!! I had to throw that in to make my whole family jealous, since they are all snowed in, in different parts of the country!

This week in review...

Monday started out with snow...okay it was actually hail, but it was wet enough that it looked like snow in the sand. Chasetin was very excited!

Yes, that's about 6 inches of ice at the bottom of the slide!

The boys watching the rain. It rained for quite a while with lots of thunder, we haven't had that in a long time!

Tuesday, Chasetin started pre-school again. I don't know who was more excited Mom or Chasetin (for those of you that didn't know, his teachers husband died suddenly about a month ago, so she needed some time off) Scott is a CNN "freak" if you will, so it was on all day, we were praying for a miracle... one didn't come!

Wednesday, we went to the Science Center. The AZ Science Center is the lamest Science Center I have ever been too, but Chasetin likes it, and we have a year pass so it doesn't hurt to go. They have a new dinosaur exhibit, Chasetin loved it and Tanner clung to my leg the whole time, just sure they were going to eat them!

Chasetin had to take this pic, becuase Tanner literally wouldn't let me put him down!

Thursday was pre-school again, have I mentioned how much I love these days? Tanner and I went to story time at the library. He's starting to learn to sing songs, well do the actions at least... hes really good at itsy bitsy spider and tries really hard at wheels on the bus, but his arms just don't seem to work right yet!

and Today, Friday, we went to the zoo. We have a membership pass here too, so again no money spent. We tried to do some different things so the zoo doesn't get boring.

the coolest tree house ever!

driving a tractor at the petting zoo

all in all, its been a great week... hope yours was too!

Random thoughts today!

I'm feeling lazy today because it's raining, that happens so rarely that we're just enjoying it. Little Man had big plans to go outside and practice "his basketball game" that when he opened the door he said "I can't believe my eyes, it's raining"

So because I'm lazy, I've just been sitting at the computer playing. Have you ever hit the button at the top of the blogger screen, the one that says "next blog"? wow! what fun!! I've been spying basically into all these people's lives, there are a lot of photographer blogs out there too, so I've been enjoying all their beautiful photos. I just really want to find more people I know that have blogs so I have something worthwhile to look at while I'm having these lazy days!

One of those photography blogs I found had the cutest pics of her boys in the tub, I thought photos like that would be great artwork for the bare walls of my bathroom. So below are some cute ones i took of Squirt. Little Man was too busy being a "water lizard"(????) to have his photo taken. Maybe next time!

Squirt had a big day yesterday, while changing his diaper last night, he was fighting me so hard to put on a new one, I stood him up and said "what do you want?" and he pulled my hand to the bathroom and pointed to the potty, so I sat him on it and he peed!! Let me tell you, I was as excited as I've ever been, I mean he his 22 months old. I fell asleep later that night to dreams of never buying diapers again! Of course he shown no interest today, but it's a start. This is almost 2 years earlier than Little Man! I thought he'd go to kindergarten in diapers!

Anyways that's my random thoughts for the day. Here is one more pic of the boys, they were just being cute. Have a good day
